Endoscopic image quality is decided by the box behind the scope. This category, around 17 units, covers video processors, camera control units, integrated light sources and the documentation systems sharing the tower with them: flexible endoscopy processors from Pentax and Olympus, rigid-scope camera controllers from Karl Storz and others, plus complete trolleys. Compatibility with the scopes you already own governs everything here, so model and generation matter more than headline specifications.

Telling processors, camera control units and light sources apart

The names get used loosely, and buying the wrong class of unit is the most common mistake in this category. Three distinct devices are involved, plus the equipment that records what they produce.

  • Video processor, flexible endoscopy: drives the image sensor built into the scope tip, processes the signal and outputs video. Several designs integrate the light source in the same chassis.
  • Camera control unit, rigid endoscopy: pairs with a separate camera head that couples to the eyepiece of a rigid scope. The unit is inert without its matching head and coupler.
  • Light source: xenon, halogen or LED, feeding a fibre-optic light cable. Sold both standalone and built into processors.
  • Documentation and capture: recorders and image management units sitting downstream of the processor.
  • Complete trolleys: processor, light source, monitor and ancillaries on one cart, shipped as a working set.

Will this processor work with the endoscopes you already own?

Answer this before anything else. Scopes and processors are matched within one manufacturer's own generations, and a connector that physically fits gives no guarantee that the processor supports that scope's sensor generation. No brand's processor drives another brand's scopes.

  • List your existing scopes by full model number first, then check them against the processor generation rather than the other way round.
  • For rigid systems, three parts must match: control unit, camera head and coupler. Heads are frequently sold separately and are the part that fails first.
  • Check video outputs against your monitor and capture chain. Older units output composite, S-Video or analogue RGB in standard definition, and no downstream 4K monitor recovers detail an SD processor never produced.
  • Confirm the regional video standard on analogue-era equipment, where PAL and NTSC variants exist of the same model.
  • Ask for exact model, revision and software version against the serial number of the unit you are quoted.

What wears out in an endoscopy video chain?

The electronics tend to outlast everything around them. Failures cluster in consumables and flexing parts, which is useful, because those are exactly the items you can ask about before buying.

  • Lamp modules: xenon and halogen lamps are rated consumables. Where the unit keeps an hour counter, ask for the reading, and check whether lamps for that model are still made.
  • Light cables: broken fibres and burnt ends cut output badly and are easy to overlook.
  • Camera head cables: the flex point immediately behind the head is the classic failure, accelerated by sterilisation cycles.
  • Scope interface: contact blocks, water and air pins, and connector seals on flexible endoscopy processors.
  • Trolley infrastructure: castors, isolation transformer and mains distribution.
  • Capture units: storage drives, and whether network or DICOM export was ever licensed on that unit.

Do you need a whole tower or a single unit?

Buying a complete trolley sidesteps most compatibility risk, because those units were already working together in a hospital. Buying a single box makes sense in two situations: replacing a failed unit with the identical model, or holding a spare against downtime in a room that cannot stop.

The trade-off is logistics rather than function. A loaded trolley ships as one crated item, which Auxilmed can crate and forward worldwide with export documentation handled, whereas single units move easily but leave you to match them into an existing tower. Where a room is being equipped from scratch and no legacy scopes constrain the choice, the assembled tower is the shorter route.

Does a camera control unit include the camera head?

Not by default. Control units and camera heads are separate items and are sometimes listed apart. Each product page records what is supplied with that specific unit, including couplers and cables, so confirm the full set with Auxilmed rather than assuming a complete chain.

Can a used processor be mixed with another brand's endoscopes?

No. Within the imaging chain, processor and scope must come from the same manufacturer and from compatible generations. Peripherals are more forgiving: monitors, insufflators, light cables and trolleys can generally be mixed, provided connectors and video formats match.

Are lamp hours documented for these units?

Where the unit itself reports lamp or system hours, that reading forms part of the condition check recorded for the item. Not every design keeps a counter. Ask for the figure against the serial number you are considering, and confirm lamp availability for the model too.
